The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) has published a discussion paper on play-based learning with intentionality. Play-based learning is a key strategy for early childhood education. However this discussion paper highlights, based on research evidence, that play on its own is not enough. Play must have an educational purpose, an explicit intention to achieve a particular learning outcome.
