During our visit to Sri Lanka this month, Dr. Vaughan met with the Managing Director and staff of IBM Sri Lanka. The late Dr. Mahesan Kandaiya, founder and former President of PIMD, worked for IBM Sri Lanka before migrating to Australia where he continued working for IBM until his retirement. During his time with IBM Sri Lanka he installed the first large IBM ‘mainframe’ (today’s server) computer in South Asia. It was installed for the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation. In memory of Dr. Kandaiya, the staff of IBM Sri Lanka have volunteered to write stories to be published as childrens’ readers and used in the Lotus English Literacy Program. These books will be made available free of charge to all schools in Sri Lanka as ebooks.
